Wow! We flew in from Missouri and found this place on Yelp. We pulled up and thought "oh no...". It looks like maybe you could get into some trouble...but no. Walk in. Trust me. Soak in the smell and ambience. We had a shrimp poboy, brisket, chicken, and jambalaya. Tater tots. Potato salad. Excellent. Everything was either excellent (jambalaya, poboy, tater tots) or unique and really good (potato salad). Excellent. Well done.
We were passing through Flagstaff on our way to Chicago in the early evening and we were getting the hungries. After searching the map for a while we decided to try Sachmo's Cajun and BBQ. Pulling up outside we found the one illuminated storefront in a line of shops. Stepping inside we found welcoming staff and a tantalizing list of tempting options on the Satchmo's menu. We decided to order a Fried Catfish Poboy, a Sliced Chicken Poboy, Coleslaw, and Red Beans and Rice. The poboys were tremendous! The fried catfish poboy had a generous amount of fried catfish on a fresh bun accompanied by coleslaw, tomato, and Cajun remy sauce. The combination of flavors in this generous sandwich was tantalizing and delicious! The chicken sandwich included sliced BBQ chicken combined with coleslaw, tomato, and the Cajun remy sauce. Luscious flavor in this wonderful sandwich! The coleslaw had a spirited vinegar taste accented with mild peppery thin slices of jalapeño. So good! The red beans and rice included slow simmered red beans with house blend seasoning blanketing perfectly cooked white rice. So sumptuous! We loved our first visit to Satchmo's! We hope to return at some point in the future on another cross country drive. Yum!
Ribs are fall off the bone delicious. Half a rack is plenty. Potatoes were great. I was not a fan of the Cole slaw. Pulled pork sandwich excellent. Gumbo was very good. Order with the cashier and take a number when you sit down. Restaurant is a little small and can get crowded. For some reason I was able to get a table both times I went.
We sought this place out on our recent trip to Sedona/Flagstaff because someone in our group was fixated on getting a poboy sandwich. The reviews for this place were encouraging so we made the slow drive across town to check it out. Admittedly, as we pulled up we were a bit put off by the location. Satchmo's is located in a tired old strip mall with businesses such as massage parlors and smoke shops. Though they had big windows, these are now rendered completely opaque by their window treatments and there's no way to look inside without stepping through the door. Once inside, it's a different atmosphere. Sure, there is still a worn-out appearance, with diner style tables and chairs and a scuffed-up hardwood floor. But the general vibe was upbeat and the service was excellent. I asked for recommendations from the very cheerful young woman behind the counter, and she suggested several of her favorites while also cautioning us about the size of some of the meals. In the end we feasted on the following: Tot basket - TBH these are really just Ore-Ida style tater tots but flavored with Cajun seasoning. I've had similar variations in the past, so this wasn't anything really special. These are a bit on the salty side. Blackened shrimp poboy - pretty good flavor, maybe just a little overseasoned however. Shrimp were big and juicy and properly cooked. Regular shrimp poboy - IMO the better choice of the two. Again, the shrimp was done well and the flavors were more clean. Blackened fish filet over dirty rice - I was soooo craving the pulled pork but I can actually make this pretty well on my own so it never makes sense to pay for it. I forget what kind of fish this was (it wasn't the catfish). Overall a really good dish but with the seasoning and the remoulade, the flavor of the fish does get a bit masked. Prices were about what's expected these days - inflation has really driven up the cost of eating out. As mentioned above, the staff was great. Very good experience overall.
Delicious! Love Satchmo's! Used to live in the Flagstaff area and eat there all the time. Moved away and haven't been to Flagstaff in years. Had a work meeting in Flagstaff so had to get some Satchmo's. Cajun barbecue! Got a shaved chicken PoBoy with tots. Man they're tots are good! Sorry the picture is only half a sandwich. I couldn't wait and ate half before I took a picture.
